British Columbia’s central interior is country made for the outdoor enthusiasts, with a full slate of year-round recreational activities. For those who want to explore throughout the region without checking into a new hotel every night, consider renting a trailer or RV and plan a route that takes you through many different areas, as each of them offer something unique. The other option is to have a rental RV operator set up your trailer or RV at a resort that’s central to your interests so you have a base camp each night to enjoy after your day excursions.
Each city in the Interior offers something different, with most of them accessible using the interior’s Highway 97 system, which stretches from Osoyoos in the south through the Okanagan Valley, then continues up through Kamloops to the BC-Yukon border, extending all the way into Alaska, terminating at Delta Junction. Highway 97a branches at Vernon to connect to the TransCanada Hwy 1 at Sicamous. Highway 97b branches off 97a to connect Enderby to Salmon Arm, also on Hwy 1. And Highway 97c is known as the Coquihalla Connector, joining Highway 5 at Merritt to take travelers directly to the Lower Mainland passing through the Coastal Mountain Range.
The recreational regions of the North, Central and South Okanagan extend from the southern wineries and orchards in Osoyoos and Oliver, to the Peach City of Penticton nestled between the southern tip of Okanagan Lake and Skaha Lake, to the Interior’s largest city at Kelowna, to the smaller city of Vernon at the northern end of Okanagan Lake – the region’s largest lake at 120km from tip to tip. Each larger city is within an easy drive of recreational mountain facilities for skiing in the winter, or hiking and mountain biking in the summer. Big White for Kelowna, Apex Mountain for Penticton, and Silver Star Provincial Park just twenty minutes outside of Vernon. With provincial campgrounds and private resorts located throughout the region, persons renting trailers or RVs have many options to choose from, depending on what amenities they require from a host campsite.
